How to Prepare Your Home’s Plumbing for Spring and Summer
by NCREW / DESIGN,
1. Clear Your Drains and Gutters
As winter comes to an end, it's important to clear your drains and gutters of any debris that may have built up. Leaves, dirt, and other debris can block drainage systems, leading to potential flooding or water damage as spring rains arrive. Clean out your gutters and check that outdoor drains are clear to ensure water flows properly away from your home.
Consider installing drain covers or guards to prevent debris from entering your pipes and causing blockages throughout the year.
2. Inspect Your Water Heater
Spring is a great time to check the condition of your water heater. Sediment can build up in the tank over time, which reduces efficiency and can lead to costly repairs. Flush your water heater to remove sediment and ensure it's running efficiently, especially as you head into warmer months when it may get less frequent use.
Schedule a professional inspection if your water heater is older or showing signs of inefficiency. This can prevent unexpected breakdowns during peak usage.
3. Check for Hidden Leaks
Spring is the perfect time to inspect your home for hidden leaks that may have developed over the winter. Look for signs of water damage, such as stains on ceilings, walls, or floors, and listen for the sound of running water when everything is turned off. Catching small leaks early can prevent bigger issues like mold growth, water damage, and higher water bills.
Monitor your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter reading changes, you may have a hidden leak that needs to be addressed.
